A solo exhibition by Falmouth University Photography MA (Online) lecturer Colin Pantall is currently on show at the Duelab Gallery in Catania, Sicily. The body of work, titled All Quiet on the Home Front explores fatherhood, landscape and identity, and cements Pantall’s reputation as both an educator and a practising photographer whose work resonates internationally.

Spanning over 12 years, All Quiet on the Home Front charts Colin Pantall’s experience of early fatherhood through the landscapes surrounding his home in Bath. Created during moments of escape from the confines of family life in a small flat, the series captures the tender and sometimes anxious relationship between father and daughter as it unfolds in post-industrial woods, riverbanks and hillsides.

“It’s the story of becoming a child and becoming a father,” Pantall says. “These are the landscapes where both Isabel and I found ourselves. It’s a series of landscapes, it’s the story of growing up and growing old. It’s a self-portrait.”

The project began with a vivid dream—part humorous, part unsettling—that encapsulated the tension between domestic safety and parental fear. That sense of “morbidity, claustrophobia and anxiety,” as Pantall describes it, is central to the work. Yet his photographs also offer warmth and beauty; a visual diary of companionship, exploration and renewal within the English landscape.

"I never really knew who I was. Then my daughter was born. And I became a father. And that is what I became."

Originally published as a photobook, All Quiet on the Home Front forms the first in a quartet of works examining how the personal, environmental and historical intersect with family histories. The next instalment in the series is due for publication later this year.

As a lecturer on Falmouth’s Photography MA (Online), Pantall’s ongoing professional practice feeds directly into his teaching. His work exemplifies the course’s ethos of supporting photographers who want to develop meaningful, reflective projects that engage with the world around them.

All Quiet on the Home Front is on show at Duelab Gallery until 16 November 2025.
