Illustration & Authorship: Expanded Definitions
Discover the evolving landscape of contemporary graphic authorship in this overview session. We’ll introduce a range of approaches across picture books, graphic novels, illustrated adult fiction and poetry, and fine art/drawing practices. From the interdisciplinary textile and sculptural installations of Emma Talbot to the new wave of experimental comics showcased in publications like France’s Lagon Revue, this session is intended to give a taste of the expanded field of illustration and narrative art.
We’ll also look more specifically at focalisation, a powerful narrative concept that anchors the reader in a character’s subjective experience and/or emotional state. Through a simple but effective drawing exercise, you’ll gain practical insight into how shifting attention can nuance your visual storytelling.
Finally, we’ll take a brief look at the methodology of auto-fiction, one of a number of approaches students take to research in order to effectively ground their work and practice.
This masterclass is ideal for illustrators, writers, comic creators, and visual practitioners looking to broaden their narrative approaches, experiment with form, and enrich their storytelling toolkit.
