Hey and welcome! My name is Belle, and I'm a Creative Writing BA (Online) student at Falmouth University. I'm going to be writing about why I chose to study my course with Falmouth, what my experience has been like and more. If you're thinking of studying with us online or maybe even taking the same course, you've come to the right place!
Why I chose my course
Writing is something that’s always come naturally to me and I’ve always loved doing. However, when I finished my A-Levels and began working full-time, I found myself with less time and motivation to write. After a few years passed, I knew I wanted to get back into education. The only issue was- how? I wasn’t in a position to give up work and go back to education full-time, nor did I want to leave my town and start over without friends and family. So, when I found out about this course, I was over the moon. The course had a great reputation, interesting modules, and flexibility. This course has allowed me to get back in touch with something I felt was missing for a long time, whilst not having to give up my life in order to do it. Hitting that ‘Apply’ button felt absolutely terrifying at the time, but it’s a decision I’ve never regretted making.
What's it like to study online?
Before I started the course, I had no idea what to expect, and, if you’re a prospective online student, you’re probably feeling the same way. Alongside working, it can be tough sometimes. There’s a lot of things to balance. However, the support from Falmouth staff and students is amazing. I get to connect with my peers on my course, both on the online forums and via our WhatsApp Group chat. We give feedback on each other’s work and learn together, but we also have a lot of banter and are there for each other if anyone needs a rant.
The staff are brilliant, too. Although I’ve never met them in person, I feel like I’ve got a great rapport with my tutors and module leaders. The staff will always do their best to make time for 1-1 catch-ups at a time that works for both of us, and are always on-hand to reply to emails.
At times, things can get overwhelming, but having that support network that you get through Falmouth makes so much of a difference, and reminds me that I’m not alone. One thing I’ve always received from the Falmouth community is support and encouragement. Everyone believes in each other, and that’s part of what makes the online studying experience so special.
My advice to prospective students
- Be prepared to dedicate your time. This course will need your time, and a fair chunk of it. But don't let this put you off! If I can balance this course with my life and a full-time job, trust me, you can too.
- Keep an open mind. This is an online course, and it's going to be different than a face-to-face university experience. But, you're going to meet new people, face new challenges, and thrive in areas you never believed you could.
- Be brave. Starting this course was one of the biggest decisions I've ever made, and undoubtedly one of the best. It's changed my life, and although I was terrified when I initially accepted my place, I would go back and do it all over again. Being brave also means believing in yourself. Believe you are good enough for this course. Challenge yourself.
- Reach out for advice if you need to. Our students and staff are always happy to have a conversation about any doubts you might be having, or anything you need further clarification on. This is just a taste of the type of support system you'll get if you enrol with us.
- Do what's right for you. Remember that this is your decision and yours alone. If something inside of you is telling you to go for it, go for it. Try to let go of any fears of judgement you might have, and be ready to embark on an amazing journey with Falmouth!
Bonus tip...
Visit the campus at some point. I found some time in the summer between first and second year to head down to Falmouth and have a look at the campus for myself, and I'm glad I did! It was nice to see in person the community that I'm part of.
