Lecturer, Post-Production and VFX

From a young age Julian has had a fascination with the creation of imagery, be it stills, sculpture, theatre or film. He went on to secure numerous commissions and exhibited his art work. From this original training in fine art and sculpture, the move into animation was a natural progression. Although his early creations of experimental stop-frame animations shot on 35mm colour slide film are best left on the shelf. After completing an undergraduate degree, Julian pursued a career as a broadcast camera operator working primarily on documentaries, TV factual features and drama for broadcasters such as BBC, Channel 4 and Sky. With the development of digital technologies Julian found himself shooting and creating more VFX and animation work. With a keen interest in this field Julian changed tack, completed an MSc, and moved into the post-production side of things. With the arrival of his first child, the thought of long days filming in dodgy locations and living out of a suitcase became less appealing and so he took an opportunity to move into higher education with a post at Royal Holloway. Roll on 10 (plus) years and positions at several top UK Universities, Julian was delighted to take up a post at Falmouth University’s School of Television, where he now teaches on the Animation and VFX course. Julian continues to produce his own art work and independent digital games projects.
