Jake Hawkins graduated BA (Hons) Illustration in 2019. We caught up with him recently to find out what he has been up to since leaving Falmouth.

How did you find it after leaving University?
Fortunately things happened quickly after graduating and I ended up moving to London for my career. I’m definitely my happiest when I have a daily routine and I was luckily straight back into one.

What experiences have you had since leaving Falmouth University?
Soon after graduating I got a full time position as a Designer at The Telegraph. I’ve also had the opportunity to take on some freelance projects, including a Gay Times cover and an important report cover for Iraq’s first LGBTQ+ organisation. I’m also shortlisted for The World Illustration Awards 2020, in the new talent, editorial category.

What has inspired you in your work?
My work has definitely been inspired by social justice issues and the fight for equality. When studying at Falmouth in my final year, this was seemingly the overarching theme that connected so much of my work and fortunately this has led to some fantastic and similar commissions since graduating. In a broader sense, art in general, whether illustrative or performance can inspire me, especially when it transcends language, whilst making its point clear. For me, clever conceptual illustrations are always the aim.

What makes you so determined?
I’ve always had a strong work ethic and I’m completely in love with being a creative which definitely helps! I also have lots of goals, dream clients and commissions which I hope to achieve in the future, which is undoubtedly a strong driving force. When you enjoy what you do, you will put a lot of time into it, and that will help you to stay on track.

Any tips/advice you would give to current students?
To have more self-belief and confidence in your work!

Anything else you would like to add about your journey so far?
I’m excited for the future.
