Create a full reclining figure sculpture in clay from a life model on this 3 day course. It's suitable for all levels and is based in a fantastic art studio on our beautiful Falmouth Campus.
Using visual observation and anatomical guidance, you will create a full reclining figure sculpture in clay over the course of 3 days.
Working with a life model in the studio, following some quick initial life drawings in charcoal, you will mould the figure without an armature, learning to look at proportion, musculature, surface texture and likeness as we work with our life model for a reference.
This is an ideal introductory course for beginners to sculpture and is also suitable for more experienced artists who wish to broaden their anatomical and sculptural knowledge.
You'll leave with your raw clay sculpture that you can take home and continue working on, or for an optional extra charge this can be fired as a final sculpture and collected at a later date.
This course is taught by Emily Roberts, a figurative artist, sculptor, and teacher whose work is held in private collections across Europe and North America. Emily teaches this course in an accessible method where techniques are built up step by step. Each day will be spent in taught sessions with a life model constantly available for a reference point. There will be time to develop and explore techniques as you work through each day.
Course outline
Day one:
After choosing a pose for our model we will draw. Creating several life drawings from different positions will allow us to understand better the form, as well as provide reference images for the sculpture. Once we have a selection of drawings we will begin to create a clay framework, building up to the heights and widths of the figure.
Day two:
Working up our initial frame we will begin to block out the mass of the figure, slowly beginning to sculpt shape and detail. Concentrating on anatomy we will work towards creating correct proportion from each angle until the sculpture is working as a whole.
Day three:
The third day will be spent concentrating on surface texture and finish, placing the final details on the sculpture. Special emphasis will be placed on the portrait, hands and feet.
When
9th - 11th July from 9.30am - 5pm
Each day will have the following timings:
9.30: Arrival and welcome, tea and coffee then straight into our morning session.
1pm – 2pm: Lunch break (please bring a packed lunch or visit a nearby cafe)
2pm – 5pm: Afternoon session
5pm – 9pm: The art studio will remain open until 9pm on days 1-2 for you to continue working on your own, if you wish to do so.
