Virtual event

Our Masterclasses give you an opportunity to hear from our academic experts on a wide range of hot industry topics, while getting a flavour of our online master’s degrees. In this MA Fine Art (Online) Masterclass, you'll hear from Josie Cockram, Course Leader for our MA Fine Art (Online) course.

The Centre of the Real: The Artist’s House

‘Our house is our corner in the world. It is our first universe, a real cosmos in every sense of the word’
- Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space, 1969

This Masterclass considers the domestic space, a space in which many of us develop our art practice and tune in to online study.

Course Lead Josie Cockram will invite you to look at – and listen to – the spaces within your house: from the front door to the kitchen table. Together we’ll consider how this sphere can frame our view of the world elsewhere, and how the home-as-workspace can be generative for artists.

‘Without a home at the centre of the real, one was not only shelter-less but also lost in nonbeing, in unreality’
John Berger, and our faces, my hear, brief as photos, 1984.
