Gretchen Viehmann

Job title
Head of Press & Editorial Photography
01326 259434 Ext: 259434

I have been the director of photography for the New York Post and the New York Daily News and have been involved with BA(Hons) Press & Editorial Photography course since 2008, when I helped to establish the partnership between Falmouth and London-based photo agency Rex Features, where I was then chief editor. This relationship has flourished over the years and we have a vibrant work-experience program in place that has led to full-time employment for a number of alumni.

I studied documentary film and animation at New York University, and have been photographing and illustrating since childhood. After leaving NYU I was the head of Rights and Reproductions for the Museum of the City of New York, working with the archival collections of Jacob Riis, Berenice Abbott, Samuel Gottscho and Stanley Kubrick and it was here that my love of historical photography and research really took hold.

I became head of press & editorial photography in June 2014. I am passionate about giving our students a solid academic foundation mixed with an awareness of the ever-evolving photo industry.
