Joe studied BA Fine Art Painting at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, graduating in 2002. After a period spent working as a practising artist, Joe completed his MFA in Fine Art Media at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London in 2010. A burgeoning interest in how drawing and thinking are related led to completion of his practice-led PhD in Drawing Research at Loughborough University in 2015, the same year he began as a visiting lecturer in Fine Art CHS, Royal College of Art, London.

Joe joins Falmouth University in 2016 as a lecturer in Drawing. With a passion for developing all forms of drawing in a studio based environment, his current research explores the utility of drawing from an ontological perspective. In pedagogical terms, this extends towards clarifying the role of methods such as seriality and variational practice within the context of teaching observational drawing, and the link between art and philosophy that arises as a result.
