Our series of workshops and problem-solving situations will teach you advanced crafts in image-making and how to communicate through images across a broad spectrum of print media publications. You'll need more than just the ability to take a good picture to succeed, so we'll help you develop an eye for opportunity and provide the support, knowledge and technical know-how for you to excel in this challenging environment.

Throughout the course, real and simulated briefs with external professional organisations such as regional, national and international press, publishers, press agencies and picture libraries will place your images for publication in newspapers, magazines and books in the professional market, building your portfolio.

By choosing to study for a degree in Press & Editorial Photography you will:

  • Be introduced to a wide range of photographic practices and skills through ‘hands-on' project work, essays, and seminar presentations.

How is the course taught?

This full-time course is delivered in study blocks. Operating on a basis of continuous assessment with no formal examinations, you'll be measured using a combination of visual, verbal and written assignments. You'll also be asked to develop peer and self-evaluation skills which will be used in critical, conceptual, productive and professional capacities.

  • Well-equipped black and white and colour darkrooms and process areas
  • Large professional-standard studios
  • Film and paper processing machines
  • Fully colour-managed digital suites
  • Digital training area with Adobe CS4 Creative Suite
  • Professional quality film scanners and Adobe Photoshop software
  • Professional printing and mounting service equipped with laser and LED digital printers and large format inkjet printers
  • Photography store containing a large range of equipment for loan including digital and film cameras, large format cameras, and studio and location lighting.

Projects

Recent projects taken on by BA(Hons) Press & Editorial Photography students include staging an exhibition, entitled First Edition, at Calumet's London headquarters. The private view was attended by some of the industry's leading photographers, picture editors, photojournalists and documentary filmmakers.

Taster days

Our taster days are intended to give prospective applicants the chance to immerse themselves in their course of choice for a full day, working on a project with our staff and students. We run tours of all our facilities and accommodation, provide lunch, and really give guests a flavour of life at Falmouth.

Interview and selection process

All applicants will be asked to submit a project prior to interview of eight images in hard copy 8 x10 format.

Applicants invited to interview on the strength of project submission. Those invited to interview will have a campus tour followed by an individual interview and portfolio discussion. Portfolio should contain not only photography, but evidence of research and writing skills, eg an essay or report, together with any other artwork, 3D work or evidence of idea development, eg sketchbooks or workbooks.

Interviews will be held on 1 and 8 December 2011, 4, 5, 12 and 26 January, 9, 16 and 23 February, 1 and 8 March 2012.
