    FXU Awards 2012 Students donned their finery to celebrate their contribution to the wider community at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall on Thursday 1 March. The ceremony was the first of its kind to be planned by FXU, the combined Students' Union for University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter in Cornwall, to recognise achievements in a wide range of areas from sporting prowess to supporting others and fundraising for local charities.

Why study for a BA(Hons) Fashion Photography degree at University College Falmouth?

Fashion photography is a profession at the cutting edge when it comes to technique and creativity. At Falmouth, we will help you to develop the skills, confidence and imagination to stand out from the crowd and make your mark in this exciting but highly competitive world.

One of the few photography degrees in the UK to sit within an internationally respected Fashion Department, this course mirrors the fashion industry - so you'll develop excellent technical skills in photography alongside gaining an in-depth knowledge of fashion. Working closely with BA(Hons) Fashion Design and BA(Hons) Performance Sportswear Design, and supported by highly experienced, professionally active lecturers and visiting speakers, you will undertake live briefs and collaborations from the outset. You will also learn how to run complex fashion shoots, both in the studio and on location.

Our students are encouraged to apply for international placements and study opportunities in leading fashion centres to gain a diverse and global understanding of the industry.

At Falmouth, we place a real emphasis on location photography and, with its extraordinary landscape, Cornwall is the perfect place to develop your skills. Working across both our Woodlane and Tremough campuses, you will have access to our multi-million pound, purpose-built Photography Centre, recognised as one of the best student facilities in Europe. You will be taught a range of digital imaging practices, from high-end retouching to advanced image manipulation and you will be encouraged to use all the resources and facilities Falmouth has to offer.

BA(Hons) Fashion Photography will provide you with the skills, knowledge, confidence, entrepreneurial drive and business acumen needed to succeed in a highly competitive marketplace. Students will be supported in cultivating a strong professional identity and should graduate with an individual portfolio that defines their distinctive style as image-makers.

Please note: We are delighted to confirm that BA(Hons) Fashion Photography (previously posted as subject to validation) is now validated and running with its first full cohort of undergraduates. The current course description varies in some respects to the initial pre-validation text. This is a result of the lengthy and rigorous validation process, which includes industry and academic consultation. 

How is the course taught?

This full-time course is delivered in modules over three years. On a basis of continuous assessment with no formal examinations, you'll be measured using a combination of visual, verbal and written assignments and portfolio assessment.

You will also be asked to develop peer and self-evaluation skills, which will be used in critical, conceptual, and professional capacities.

Everything in our purpose built Photography Centre and exceptional Fashion Studios is at your fingertips. Specific facilities include:

  • Large professional-standard studios
  • Fully colour-managed digital suites with specialist print processing facilities
  • Digital training area with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Professional quality film scanners and Adobe Photoshop software
  • Professional printing and mounting service equipped with state of the art digital printers and large format inkjet printers
  • Photography store containing a large range of industry standard equipment available for loan 

Projects

Fashion Photography is a new course at Falmouth; some of the successes of the Fashion Department include:

  • Graduates have secured jobs at Burberry, Nicole Farhi, M.A.S. (Sri Lanka) and Clarks
  • Students have gained work placements at Elle Magazine, Maison Martin Margiela (Paris), Todd Lynn (London), Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane and Marios Schwab
  • UK winner of Lee Cooper Centenary Jeans Competition Award

Interview and selection process

Applicants will be asked to upload an electronic portfolio for pre-interview selection. Typically selected applicants will be invited to a course presentation, campus tour and interview.
