Presidents in the Movies: American History and Politics on Screen

Kingsley has recently contributed a chapter on George W. Bush to Presidents In The Movies: American History and Politics on Screen, a book which examines the representation of US presidents in film and television, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2011 as part of their esteemed Evolving Presidency series.

'The Cinematic Watergate: From All the President's Men to Frost/Nixon', a contribution to a second collection, entitled Remembering Watergate, considers the legacy of the scandal that engulfed the US presidency. Publication is scheduled to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Watergate in January 2012, again on Palgrave Macmillan.

Current projects/forthcoming outputs

A larger research project, entitled The Unification of Film Sound, interrogates the use of sound in film, and considers the relationship between craft and creativity, and the differences in approaches by studio and independently financed feature films. The project is structured around close study informed by a series of interviews conducted with leading film practitioners, including The Hurt Locker's Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow, screenwriter Mark Boal and editor Chris Innis. Other interviewees include the composers David Shire, Marvin Hamlisch, Lee Ranaldo, Jon Cameron, Craig Armstrong and Lalo Schifrin, in addition to a number of cinematographers, editors, sound recordists and producers. The first work to be published from this project is due for publication in 2012, as part of Kathryn Bigelow: Conversations, through the University of Mississippi Press.
