I work in digital marketing for The Walt Disney Company Europe, Middle East & Africa, implementing digital marketing plans to support shows like Lost and Desperate Housewives, Disney's kids' content such as Hannah Montana and High School Musical, plus feature films like Toy Story 3. Falmouth's facilities were a big draw for me; we had access to some of the best equipment and learning spaces in the country. The chance to study somewhere with breathing space - yet still be surrounded by art, music and culture - also really excited me. After graduating, my first job was at the production company Eyeworks, working on Channel 4's show T4. Since then I've worked at the BBC on various shows including Strictly Come Dancing and Top Gear.
Chris Skarratt, BA(Hons) Broadcasting Studies – 9 years on…
Holly Rivers is now in the Third Year of a BA Hons Broadcasting degree run by University College Falmouth, one of the founding partners in the innovative Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative. After leaving her home in Cardiff, Holly briefly continued her education in London, but soon realised she wanted to be somewhere less impersonal- in Cornwall, she found an excellent degree course and somewhere where she could really make a difference.
Holly explains that students can achieve more than just an education by attending college, “It’s about growing as a person as well. Taking my degree in Cornwall has given me the opportunity to combine my two passions- film and documentary making with human rights”
Along with fellow students, Holly founded the Human Rights Society at the Tremough campus and has been actively involved in fundraising, campaigning and organising events on a variety of human rights issues.
The degree course has given Holly the skills and ability to produce films which raise awareness of the plight of people in extreme and often desperate situations, as part of her coursework. “The really good thing about this Broadcasting course is the units can be tailored to your specific interests- meaning I can really achieve something with my work”.
Her short film about domestic violence against women “Re-Dress” was shown at an Amnesty International event in November to around 100 members of the general public at the Burrell Theatre in Truro School. Representatives from women’s refuge centres, domestic violence support groups and the police supported the event, which was chaired by local MP Julia Goldsworthy and received coverage from local press and radio stations.
Another documentary entitled “Cornwall’s Hidden Homeless”, produced by Holly and three other Broadcasting students as part of their course, features the dedicated work of the St Petroc’s Society- a Cornish charity which supports single homeless people by providing temporary accommodation and social care services. The striking message of the film is that homelessness happens to people from all walks of life- and that the commitment of a few people can give them a chance to regain their lives.
When Holly graduates she is keen to work in the human rights field; to continue to use the skills she has developed to raise awareness of discrimination and suffering through thought provoking films and in doing so, tackle problems that could affect any one of us at any time.

Hitting deadlines, collating information, creating an end product and having to work to a strict brief mimics the same processes involved in professional production. Falmouth lays solid foundations. Chris Skarratt, Co-Director of Petrol Digital Media, Soho
Digital Media at Falmouth invites you to enter a creative media design environment that's constantly evolving. Developments in networked culture have not only changed the ways that we communicate; they have also changed the way we think and interact. It's more important than ever to be an informed and agile practitioner who understands the forces that shape contemporary communication systems, from production to interpretation.
As ‘audiences' become ‘users', the role of communication design is increasingly important, as is the need for a sophisticated understanding of the new contexts in which meanings are being made. Creative technologies and distribution networks are in a state of constant flux - but time-honoured principles of high-quality production still apply. At Falmouth we have great facilities and are committed to enabling you to learn how to make the very best of them. Praxis is our core philosophy; the product of ideas in action. What matters most is that you acquire the skills, concepts and techniques that enable you to develop the media of the future.
University College Falmouth is part of the Cornwall Skillset Media Academy network - a UK-wide group of institutions identified as centres of excellence in creative media education and training.
You'll shape your course as you progress, exploring the areas of practice that you wish to extend and refine. Interaction is not just a key element of the course content, it's also fundamental to the student experience - self-development through informed choice. Whether you aspire towards high-end programme production or network/ participatory culture, we have a unique learning environment integrating theory and practice to help you realise the communicative potential of emergent digital media.
Our students realise projects in a number of forms including:

In 2008 Illumina joined All3Media, the UK's largest independent production group.
Andrew has been active in policy and industry groups, co-authoring OFCOM's paper New Options for Public Service in the Digital Age and has advised Lord Stephen Carter as a member of the ministerial steering board for the Digital Britain Report.
