  • The Exchange project is another prominent example of how the Combined Universities can work together to grow higher education provision in Cornwall. Tremough continues to lead the way in demonstrating how collaboration between institutions can provide an enhanced student experience, in this case making sure students in Cornwall have access to the very best of learning environments.Dr Sue Brownlow, CUC Director

Our Tremough Campus is constantly evolving and substantial investment sees several major building projects scheduled to run concurrently over the next two years. These impressive new facilities reflect our ongoing committment to research, technology, entrepreneurialism, collaboration, sustainability, and student employability. This unique blend of investments, from both University College Falmouth and external partners, will put Tremough at the forefront of innovation in the UK.

The Exchange

A £10 million joint venture with University of Exeter, The Exchange will provide a range of teaching and learning spaces, study areas and library space.

Located at the heart of the Tremough Campus, The Exchange will enable staff, students and visitors to meet, socialise, share ideas and collaborate. A 'social street' runs through the building and connects the existing Learning Resources Centre with a new collaborative lecture theatre and learning lab, ‘eddy' spaces for small group learning, and digital hubs. The campus shop and reprographics will also be included in the building.

The Exchange is due to open in August 2012.

The Exchange building has been designed to a BREEAM Excellent rating and will feature natural lighting and ventilation.

The Exchange has been enabled with a £4.37 million investment from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, £3 million from the European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme, £1 million from the South West Regional Development Agency, and a combined investment of almost £2 million from UCF and UoE.

Academy for Innovation & Research

Our Academy for Innovation & Research (AIR) is the home of research and business collaboration at University College Falmouth.

The AIR building is due to open in spring 2012. This £9 million multi-disciplinary research and development laboratory is designed for our students, staff and researchers to work with businesses on live projects at local, national and international levels.

AIR will bring specialist expertise in the areas of sustainable design and the digital economy. This will enable innovative Cornish companies to achieve their full potential by developing new products and services, new routes to market, and new relationships with each other, plus ready access to investors and suppliers, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Applied research on topics such as future transport solutions, energy challenges, eco-town developments, the ageing population, the potential of Next Generation Broadband, and questions of digital inclusion, health and wellbeing will all create growth opportunities for creative and ambitious businesses in Cornwall.

The Academy for Innovation & Research has been enabled with a £9 million investment from the European Regional Development Fund Convergence programme, the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Environment and Sustainability Institute

The University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) will be a £30 million interdisciplinary centre leading world-class research into the causes and consequences of environmental change and how to adapt to and to manage its technological, political, economic, social and behavioural effects.

Academic staff will work across the three selected themes of clean technologies, natural environment, and socio-economic research. The ESI will collaborate with key partners such as The Met Office and The Eden Project to explore innovative solutions to global problems.

The ESI has been designed to a BREEAM Outstanding rating and is due to open in July 2012.

The Environment and Sustainability Institute has been enabled with a £22.9 million investment from the EU European Regional Development Fund and £6.6 million from the South West Regional Development Agency.

Tremough Innovation Centre

Cornwall Council is leading a £13 million project to build a new state-of-the-art business innovation centre adjacent to the Tremough Campus.

The Tremough Innovation Centre (TIC) will be a specialist business facility housing up to 70 new, growing and established businesses, from graduate start-ups to national companies' regional offices. It offers knowledge-based businesses the opportunity to work and collaborate with students and staff at both University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter. Businesses will benefit from the expertise on Campus, not just in art, design, media, performance and writing, but also engineering, healthcare and renewable energy.

The building is due for completion in November 2011 with the first businesses expected to be installed in early 2012. It will be a low carbon building, designed to a BREEAM excellent standard for both pre and post construction.

The project is being led by Cornwall Council and supported by Cornwall Development Company (CDC). Investment has been provided by the European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme and the South West Regional Development Agency.
