Falmouth University’s Outreach team, along with staff from the Games Academy, invited Year 10 to 13 students from schools and colleges across the UK to try out our student-made games at the annual Games Expo.

The response from schools and colleges was incredibly positive as we welcomed over three hundred students and staff from ten schools and colleges over the two-day Games Expo.

Those who attended were able to play first-hand a range of different games designed by Falmouth University students in their first, second and third year of study. Visitors gained valuable insight on the process of game design and the importance of this discipline not only in the games industry, but also its use in business, medical, computer science, esports and other entertainment areas.

Many local schools and colleges from around Cornwall attended, including Brannel School, Cornwall College, Truro College and Callywith College. But it was also brilliant to be able to host colleges from further afield including Tavistock College, Bexhill College, and Queen Mary’s College, who are one of the leading Esports colleges in the UK. Furthermore, the team were also delighted to host a group of students from Pencalenic School, a specialist school for those with Special Educational Needs as well as a group of students who are Elective Home Educated.

The feedback from those who attended was excellent.

Brannel School:

“Just dropping you a line to say thank you for hosting our Year 10 computing students at the Games Expo yesterday. It was genuinely a pleasure to visit - you and the student ambassadors made us feel so welcome.

Feedback from our students about the Games Expo was really positive. They really liked the little booklets they were given – and I think the sticker collecting was a great idea to get them engaged. I know that a decent number of these students are keen on pursuing the games design route, so I’m sure you’ll see them again in a couple of years!”

Queen Mary’s College:

“On behalf of myself and the college, we would like to pass on our thanks for the well executed and relevant trip away. The accommodation was brilliant and allowed our students to 'unplug' and improve on their mental health with beautiful views and sunshine, whilst the campus and itinerary was relevant for both their current courses and also future options at Falmouth. We are beyond grateful and hope this can become a regular event."

Tavistock College:

"Thanks for hosting us for the Expo – such an amazing day for our students"

From this positive experience, those schools and colleges who attended will continue to work with our Outreach team to support their students considering further education in both the games industry and at Falmouth University.
