Toby Carr
Senior Lecturer
I am an Architect with over 10 years experience working at senior management level in a sustainable design consultancy. I have over 15 years experience in the construction industry. My interests are related to community engagement in the creative process, ecological design and responsible making to improve the quality of our built environment. In 2018, searching for a new challenge and adventure beyond my desk, I embarked on a journey to sea kayak in all the areas of the UK shipping forecast linking stories, places and histories of our coastal settlements and closest neighbours. I was awarded a Churchill Fellowship for the project which has been featured on BBC TV and radio, as well as in the international press. I am currently writing about the voyage which will also form a series of podcasts. I believe strongly in the power of the natural environment as a balancing force in our lives. As well as joining the exciting creative community in Falmouth, my move to Cornwall puts me closer to the sea.
My professional work includes design for wellbeing and health care, including future models for primary care, education design, schools and learning environments, community participation strategies, sustainable transport infrastructure, urban design and place making. I enjoy collaborative working across sectors and have direct experience of project delivery in large multi disciplinary teams. The results of which have been recognised by awards from the RIBA, Architecture Foundation and New London Architecture and have secured funding from government departments and regional development organisations. I enjoy design responses which are informed, meaningful, uplifting and have a story to tell.
I have a strong commitment to support creative eduction in schools and to improve access to the architectural profession. I have taught at a number of UK institutions including The Universities of Bath, Liverpool, Cambridge, Greenwich and UCL. I have had internationally published work and am invited member of the Mayor's Design Advisory Group in London. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a registered Architect.
