Independent Governor

Mark Carne CBE was chief executive of Network Rail from 2014 to August 2018. During this time the biggest railway upgrade plan ever was delivered; over £15 bln of new projects, including the iconic London Bridge station, the electrification of the Great Western Railway, the Edinburgh to Glasgow lines and the Great North Rail system. The transformation of Network Rail that he led resulted in a 25% increase in funding (up to a record £53bln) for the next five year funding period. Prior to joining Network Rail, Mark had a long international career in the oil and gas industry, culminating in him being responsible for Royal Dutch Shell's businesses in the Middle East and North Africa.

Mark lives in Cornwall and is a fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Civil Engineers and was awarded a CBE for services to the rail industry in the Queens birthday honours in 2018.
