Falmouth is committed to creating and maintaining a dynamic research culture.

We recognise the importance of attracting, nurturing and supporting research talent in order to become a university of choice for research students and academic staff at all career stages. The Director of Research and Development plays a key role in defining the research support strategy and its delivery across the University.

Research and Development

The Research and Development directorate manages the PGR researcher development programme and administers the postgraduate (PhD) research support function. We offer a range of PhD opportunities each year, linked to our three strategic research themes, namely Digital Games; Smart Design; and Creative Connected Communities. We also offer prestigious AHRC supported PhD bursaries through our 3D3 Doctoral Training Partnership with Plymouth University and University of Western England.

The Research and Development unit also provides support for the university research and innovation related committees as well as strategic reporting and planning related to research and innovation such as the Research Excellence Framework and HE-BCIS returns.

In 2014, our research student officer was recognised as someone who goes "the extra mile to shape the future for both themselves, the FXU (the joint students' union for both Falmouth and University of Exeter) and the Universities", winning that year's 'Outstanding Contribution to the Student Experience' award.

Information about support for specific activities and research-focused policies and procedures are available on the Research & Innovation pages of the University intranet.

The Research and Development directorate together with the External Funding team provide a 'cradle to grave' support service for contracts and intellectual property for externally funded research projects. This includes costing and pricing, contract negotiation, project management and intellectual property management. Guidance, tools and sources of hands-on support are available on the Research & Innovation pages of the University intranet.

Colleagues and external partners should be aware of the following:

All formal costing and pricing is done by the External Funding team and should not be taken from any other source at the University. All applications should be submitted via the External Funding team where nominated staff act as institutional submitters/authorisers.

The Director of the Research & Development is the authorised signatory for the University with regards to research and innovation contracts.
