Taking inspiration from T.S. Eliot's classic Four Quartet's Burnt Norton, East Coker, The Dry Salvages and Little Gidding, At The End We Begin will be four compelling quartets of dance based on each poem.
Stemming from his experiences of classical ballet, contemporary dance, martial arts and improvisation, Devon born Richard's powerful and full bodied choreographic language will be combined with emerging composer Samuel Hall's score of piano and cello to create a thrilling and arresting response to Eliot's timeless poetry.
At The End We Begin has been developed during a five week residency in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at the newly opened Studio Wayne McGregor, through the company's first ever FreeSpace Program. With dramaturgy by Neus Gil Cortes and costume design by costume design Hannah Taylor, At The End We Begin is Richard Chappell Dance's most challenging and collaborative work to date.
Richard Chappell – choreographer, performer and producer says:
'As a body of poetry I am fascinated by Eliot's perspective of time and creativity during Four Quartet's. As Eliot wrote Four Quartet's looking back towards the end of his at his creative life, I find his reflective language enthralling, as a young artist looking forward. I'm extremely excited to be holding the world premier of this new piece at Barbican Theatre"!'
Forming in 2013, Richard Chappell Dance has already created a large impact on the British dance scene. The creation and touring of At The End We Begin has been funded by Arts Council England, The Linbury Trust, Pavilion Dance South West and has been commissioned by the Pegasus Theatre, Oxford.
