Creative Events Management students are undertaking an extra-curricular wine course aimed at developing their knowledge and appreciation of wine to enhance their employability in the events industry.
The six-week course covers new world whites, old world whites, new world reds, old world reds, sparkling and rose. Students will discuss regions and grape varieties, sample a balance of different wines including some very high quality examples and learn about production techniques, quality points and key terminology.
Senior Lecturer Paul Russell explained: "When one of our final year students suggested a wine course we jumped at the chance to organise an enhancement programme to help develop important real world skills. Having an appreciation of wine is beneficial in a number of event management roles - particularly within hospitality events, corporate events and weddings.
"Completing this added value activity at no extra cost helps to provide a competitive advantage in the jobs market. The initial feedback has been so positive that we are already looking at potentially repeating the course next year, so if you want to know your Merlot from your Malbec and your Riesling from your Rioja you know where to come!"
Student Chloe Williams said: "The first session was such a great experience. Paul has a vast and expansive knowledge and its refreshing to be taught something a little different that provides an extra certificate to help you stand out against others in the industry. I am looking forward to the future sessions."
Students who complete the course will be awarded a Wine Appreciation for Event Managers certificate from Falmouth University in collaboration with Scarlet Wines.
