On the BA(Hons) Journalism course Bill specialises in teaching the basic journalistic skills of news gathering, news writing and sub-editing, including preparation for and co-ordination of the relevant NCTJ exams. He also delivers foreign correspondent and sports specialism options to final-year undergraduates. Additionally, Bill spearheads teaching on the BA(Hons) Sports Journalism course, delivering modules on sports reporting, sports writing and international sports journalism. He is a personal tutor and previously also taught journalistic writing on Falmouth University’s MA journalism courses.

Before starting work for Falmouth University in 2008 Bill spent 13 years working first as a news journalist and then as a sports journalist for international news organisations including United Press International (UPI), Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Reuters, both in the UK and abroad. Bill has a degree in French and Russian and has worked as a journalist in both countries, and on assignment in many others. He has covered numerous major international sports events such as the Summer and Winter Olympics, the World Cup and Wimbledon, as well as the England football team and the English Premier League.
Bill has a Postgraduate Certificate of Higher Education (PGCHE) qualification, is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has worked as an external examiner for the BA(Hons) Sports Journalism course at Southampton Solent University.

Policy engagement within Cornwall

Since 2010 I have worked with CommsConsult, a global strategic communications company based in Falmouth, to develop and deliver news conference training scenarios for students on the BA(Hons) Journalism course.

Since 2010 I have helped to organise workshops for journalism students delivered on Penryn Campus by One World Media, a charity that aims to promote better media coverage of the developing world.

In 2014 I collaborated with Source FM in Falmouth, giving students on the BA(Hons) Journalism course the opportunity to work in a real radio station rooted in the heart of the local community.
