Earlier this month, current BA(Hons) Film student Ornella Hawthorn Gardez was announced winner of the Shorties Emerging Talent Award at the London Surf Film Festival.
Entitled TEAZD, the film follows surfers Taz Knight and Ed Smith on a voyage chasing waves across Madeira. A notoriously strong category, festival judges sought, "a central pillar of modern surf culture."
Kinglsey Marshall, Head of Film, comments: "Ornella did extremely well in what is a very competitive arena. She's shown great promise throughout her studies and I'm delighted to see that her efforts have been rewarded. A festival award is a significant accolade for any filmmaker, let alone for a student. We look forward to seeing more of her work."
Open exclusively to filmmakers based in Britain or Ireland, Ornella's five minute short captured the screening panel's attention. Composed of international greats from the surf industry, the panel included Alex Dick-Read, Founding Editor of The Surfer's Path; Vince Medeiros, Co-Founder & Publishing Director at The Church of London, publisher of Huck and Little White Lies; Sam Haddad, Editor of Cooler; and Tim Nunn, Editor of Wavelength Magazine.
Now in its third year, the London Surf Film Festival draws global interest. Supported by Reef, it celebrates creative talent across international surf culture.
