Catie Close, a third year Photography student, will have her work displayed in an exhibition at Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange in Penzance.

The Many & Beautiful Things exhibition, which opens on Friday 28 September, explores the themes of youth and possibility, focussing on the rush for new experiences and the abandonment of doubt. Catie's California Roll project fits neatly into this category, as it incorporates many of the same ideas.

Catie explains: "My work marries well with the themes explored; it references the playful innocence of childhood and represents the often hazy memories we have of our youth.

"I'm very excited to have my work hung alongside artists Rineke Dijkstra and Melanie Manchot in such a fantastic space in the south west. It's a hugely positive way to begin my third year and hopefully a sign of things to come!"

The opportunity to be featured in Many & Beautiful Things came about after finishing her work placement at Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, as part of the Photography course. Catie was also offered a position as assistant marketing manager, a role she still works in alongside her studies.

She reflected: "Blair Todd, our programme curator, took an interest in my work as he felt it would sit well within the Many & Beautiful Things Show, which includes work from artists in all stages of their careers.

"Studying at Falmouth has allowed me to develop my practice by giving me enough breathing space to work independently, balanced with enough and constructive feedback to keep me on track and focussed."

In terms of the future, Catie is keeping her sights set on her immediate challenges, whilst looking forward to the upcoming showcase of her portfolio. She commented: "Starting the academic year, I am only at the beginning of a brand-new project.

"I plan to move into different pathways with this work, potentially exploring sound and moving image in relation to my photographs. In the future, I would like to continue shooting for California Roll as an ongoing project in the background."
