Derek Tyman is an artist based in Manchester. He works with artist Emma Rushton and their collaborative practice encompasses sculpture, context specific installation and events, the moving image and book-works. Recent projects have addressed the arenas established for public debate, participation and representation and with particular reference to ideas of protest and resistance - how individual and collective identities are formed or imagined.
Rushton and Tyman's exhibition 'The Argument Is Not Finished And The Stage Is Still Being Built' was produced in response to the space and context of Argument Vertoningsruimte in Tilburg, Netherlands (2012). The exhibition featured a 'space for debate' that could not be used, 'fires' that did not ignite, together with a written dialogue between two speakers and an audience. 'The Stage Is Still Being Built'.
'The Good Life', a year-long project (2010-11) assembled two spaces; a cabin at the edge of a forest and a ‘stage‘ set in the hall of a small town in Cumbria, England. Referencing the early antics and writing of Henry David Thoreau, the American writer and philosopher, the project sought to span debates of the private - the very possibility of solitude today - and the public and how they shape ideas of The Good Life.
The project 'Will Someone Stop You...?' (2007) focused on the flight of Mathias Rust, a young West German, who in 1987 flew a small Cessna airplane into Red Square, Moscow. The project brought together: several witnesses present at Rusts landing; an exhibition at Artis Art Centre, Den Bosch, The Netherlands; separate related public discussions at Artis and Unit 2 gallery, London; and a publication 'Flying Down to Moscow'.
As part of a number of projects, Rushton and Tyman have invited other artists, including Janet Hodgson, Geir Tore Holm, Brighid Lowe, Paul Rooney, Kwong Lee, Andy Webster and the art rock band Die Kunst to produce work in response to their work/occupy a space within their projects. Since 1997 they have produced a number of artists book-works. 'The Good Life' a forthcoming publication (Castlefield Gallery, 2013) will feature a CD of music written and performed by Die Kunst.
Recent solo exhibitions/projects include: Argument Vertoningsruimte, Tilburg, The Netherlands (2012); The Good Life, Lanternhouse Art Centre, Cumbria, England (2011); Neues Kunstforum, Koln, Germany (2009); Piccadillyland, Art on the Underground, London, England (2008); Artis Art Centre, Den Bosch, The Netherlands (2007); Unit 2 Gallery, London, England and 1a Space, Hong Kong, China (2006); Castlefield Gallery, Manchester and Leeds City Art Gallery, England (2005); Konstakuten, Stockholm, Sweden (2004). In 2004-5 Rushton and Tyman were artists-in-residence for ASSEMBLY 05, Bath and in 2006 and 2007 they participated in the international residency programme at 1a Space, Hong Kong, China. During 2010-11 they were artists-in-residence at Lanternhouse Art Centre, Cumbria.
