Charles was lucky enough to travel the world through his military connections after leaving school. Coming back to this country there was not the same appeal on a damp, cold, dark November morning to continue his outward bound career - so he joined the fast expanding outdoor clothing market as it became accepted in retail. Gaining a degree in Marketing with Business he continued with this direction, starting to work higher up the supply chain. He also got co-opted into the set up of the first ever Masters programme of Performance Sportswear Design (which won the RCA Sir Misha Black award), ending up as course leader and a main contributor to the first ever text on the subject. A HEFCE inspection saw him go off to study for a GRTTP qualification, but also gave him the opportunity to find out about the proposed BA(Hons) Performance Sportswear Design course at Falmouth, fitting in a part time role with his professional work for different brands.
In recent years he has become recruited into Wrap's Textile ICB comittee (working on DEFRA's SCAP), the Sustainability team at the European Outdoor Group, the Technology Strategy Board's RSA Circular Economy project, writing a regular column in the B2B press, plus his consultancy work for various sports brands. He takes greatest pride in what his graduates are still achieving around the globe.
Officially in middle-age he still escapes on walks, jumping out of planes or in boats. His skill is knowing people who know more than him, plus being able to successfully apply business principles in the field. Others attribute him with being key to ethical practice as it takes over from the fog that green-washing has created.
