Textile Design students create new flags for Penzance

UCF’s BA(Hons) Textile Design course has collaborated with Cornish designer, Lucy Birkbeck and Penwith District Council to create new flags to adorn the Promenade and Jubilee Pool at Penzance.

BA(Hons) Textile Design students were invited to submit designs for six flags that would be erected to complement 18 produced by Lucy Birbeck to coincide with the summer season and the Golowan Festival. The winning design was created by second-year student Helen Stark.

Senior Lecturer in Printed Textiles, Dr Simon Clarke, who helped select the successful design, said: “This is another great live project for Textile Design. We have worked closely with Penwith District Council, Lucy and the international flag manufacturer, the Hampshire Flag Company, who have very generously sponsored the digital printing and manufacture of Helen Stark's design, and we very much hope that this project will become an annual event.”
