Tell me more about this course: Art, Design & Media

Falmouth’s Research Strategy prioritises collaborative applied research and we invite submissions for MPhil/PhD that explore art, design or media through the combination of practice and theory. Each project is specifically tailored and through careful selection of external supervision we endeavour to match your interests with our own areas of expertise.

The College supports 3 research clusters in interactive art and design, art, nature and the environment, and digital technologies in three dimensional production. The College is able to offer a limited number of studentships for applications relevant to our research clusters.

We also attract studentships from prestigious external agencies. Past studentships have included: The Alessi Design Research Studentship in Creative Enterprise, a collaboration between the College and the prestigious Italian design factory; and the Falmouth/Eden Project Design Research Assistantship, which aimed to promote a wider understanding of the complex and critical relationship between people, the natural world and resources. A recent practice-based research student also became Artist in Residence at Tate St.Ives.

Tell more more about this course: Performance

Performance has a dynamic research culture and postgraduate researchers play an important role in the life of its research community.

Interdisciplinary research is essential to our approach and is positively encouraged in everything we do. Your research will be attached to one of our Art, Choreography, Music, Theatre or Writing subject areas, but our students' research projects are often interdisciplinary. In addition, your two-person supervision team will be drawn from more than one discipline.

During your first 18 months of study, our Postgraduate Research Student Foundation Programme will assist you in identifying the appropriate research methods for your chosen subject, as well as helping you plan and structure your project. We also support practice-led research in which your own creative practice plays a role, and documented creative work can contribute to your final thesis, alongside a written component.

All of our academic teaching staff are active researcher-practitioners. Academics and MPhil/PhD students work alongside postdoctoral Research Fellows and a steady flow of international visiting researchers. All regularly share their enquiry through a lively and engaging programme of lectures, performances, readings, concerts and a variety of other activities. In addition, our cross-College programme enables researchers in all fields to share their work and ideas. The College has collaborative partnerships with the University of Plymouth and the University of the Arts London.

Typical entry requirements

A degree or equivalent combination of academic and professional experience.

Career opportunities

Theory-based research graduates can hold university post-doctoral research fellowships, teach within the Higher Education sector, or work in the media, whilst practice-based research graduates can follow similar paths as well as enter the competitive world of professional art and design practice. If you are attracted to a specialist, outward-looking environment and believe that research is about knowledge for the future, our thriving academic community will suit you.
