Senior Lecturer

I am a marine educator with a PhD in the visual communication of marine science. I joined the Marine And Natural History Photography team as an associate lecturer when the course started in 2007.  As a now Senior Lecturer, my main research interests focus on increasing ocean optimism through creative communication of marine conservation issues.

I have been a freelance marine educator in Cornwall for the last 10 years, delivering creative marine education resources and interpretation design for a range of target audiences.  In particular I have been an educational partner of based environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage for the last eight years, being involved in many of their marine education campaigns, on themes such as marine pollution and sustainable fishing.

Research Interests

Research interests and expertise

My main research interests centre on ocean optimism and advocacy with a focus on participatory marine education techniques and positive behaviour change.  The main themes of my activities are marine pollution and sustainable fisheries, in Cornwall, the UK and overseas.

For the last four years I have led a student field trip to the Galapagos Islands.  This trip is run in collaboration with the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation.  Alongside terrestrial and underwater photography students have also made films for the Galapagos Conservation Trust and annually exhibit photography from the trip at Galapagos Day at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
