Lyric and Polis: A symposium of poetry and poetics curated by Marianne Morris

Lyric poetry is traditionally associated with expression that turns away from a sense of being-in-the-world, in favour of an exclusive interiority. Lyric & Polis gathers poets from the UK and US whose work reflects an ongoing commitment to lyric expression as a mode of negotiating the contradictions inherent in an understanding of singular selfhood as a language of the universal. How do we write through subjectivity without sacrificing a sense of plurality, and how, if at all, can writing be conceived of as a political act?
Readers also combine a consideration of these questions with a dedicated approach to poetics, praxis, and performance, with styles that are unique, invigorating, challenging, and inspiring by turns.
On Saturday 18 February readings and performances of poetry and performance-based work will be interspersed with informal discussion pertaining to matters of the writing practice, with poets invited to share their views in a series of question-and-answer sesssions.
We are also very excited to be presenting a showcase of poetry by the fantastically lyrical Neutral Norway collective.
