David Prior: ‘Organ of Corti'

5.30pm-7.00pm, Tuesday 14 June 2011
Performance Centre Sound Studio

Watch a recording of David Prior's talk here

In September 2008, liminal (architect Frances Crow and composer David Prior) were awarded a grant from the Wellcome Trust for the research phase of their project Tranquillity is a State of Mind: Listening Aids for a Listening Impaired Society. Working in partnership with Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, they brought together a research team comprising two acousticians, a computational neuroscientist and a clinical audiologist in order to develop a proposal for a ‘listening aid': a device that might facilitate contemplation on the act of listening itself. Their proposal, The Cochlea Unwound, is for a permanent acoustic intervention that would be sited between the weir at Diglis Island, Worcester and the footpath that runs alongside it.

The Cochlea Unwound utilises the acoustic technology of sonic crystals to sculpt the noise of the weir into a sound composition that unfolds according to both the speed that the visitor passes the structure and their proximity to it. In September 2010, liminal were awarded the PRS Foundation New Music Award for a travelling version of The Cochlea Unwound, which they have called The Organ of Corti. This talk will outline the ideas underlying both pieces, exploring the motivation behind the work, the acoustic principals on which it relies and the musical themes it addresses.

David Prior is a composer and sound artist with a particular interest in the relationship between sound and space. His work spans compositions for acoustic instruments, live electronics and fixed media as well as radio programmes, sound installations and sound walks. Since 2003 most of David's work in the area of sound art and exhibition sound design has been carried out through liminal, while his musical output is released under his own name or through his two collaborative music projects, Derailer (with John Matthias) and Arcades (with Dugal McKinnon). Additionally, David continues to work as a producer and sound mixer for music and film projects and is a member of the film and music collective 4waylab.

David is Associate Professor in Music and Sound Art at University College Falmouth.

About Digital Economy: research in practice

The Research Council defines Digital Economy as ‘the novel design or use of information and communication technologies to help transform the lives of individuals, society or business'.

The objective of Digital Economy: research in practice is to address the forms and use of this design as well as their results by presenting projects and research undertaken by academics and practitioners based at University College Falmouth. What we are interested in showcasing through those events is how social relations, creative practices and community engagement are the driving force behind the innovative use of digital technologies; and how multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity are methodologies that define a working framework for presented projects.

Digital Economy: research in practice series will be relevant to all members of academic staff interested in how their projects might contribute to the Digital Economy research. The talks are open to members of the public who would like to know how academics based in Cornwall engage in research which is relevant locally as well as globally.

The events have been initiated by Magda Tyżlik-Carver, Research Assistant at University College Falmouth, and supported by Prof. Phil Stenton, Associate Dean of Research and Enterprise at the School of Media & Performance.

Magda Tyżlik-Carver has worked as a Research Assistant at iRes Research in Network Art and is currently based within the Digital Economy Research Centre at University College Falmouth. She is a PhD researcher at the KURATOR/Art & Social Technology research group at University of Plymouth and an associate curator at KURATOR. She is a member of Plymouth Visual Arts Consortium curatorial board currently engaged in developing and organizing projects which will accompany British Art Show 07 in Plymouth later this year. She also lectures on Digital Media at UCF.
