Andy Harper: Merry Go Round 2010 Oil on Linen 200cm x 160cm
Andy Harper is an artist based in St Just, West Cornwall. He studied Fine Art Painting first at Brighton Polytechnic, and then at the Royal College of Art completing his MA there in 1995. He also gained an MA in Visual Culture at Middlesex University. He has exhibited nationally and internationally and been the recipient of many awards, including East End Academy at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2009 and the Latitude Contemporary Art Prize in 2011. He teaches on the MA Fine Art Programme at Goldsmiths College and is represented by Danese in New York, Morgen Contemporary in Berlin and The Page Gallery in Seoul.

With Abigail Reynolds, Andy co-founded Assembly in 2006, a space based in a converted Wesleyan Chapel in St Just. The space is used in a variety of ways, including seminars, talks and residencies. He has also recently been elected to the ProjectBase Board.

He gained critical acclaim for an extraordinary and sustained body of paintings and related works that broadly reference nature. Through a mesh of complex and mysterious layering these techinically accomplished paintings portrayed a beautiful yet dark and unsettling world. In 2011 Harper held solo shows in Berlin and Seoul, in 2012 he will be exhibiting a new body of work in New York in March (Danese).
