Listen To This: Music We'd Like to Hear in Falmouth

7:30pm to 10:00pm, 17 November 2011

Studio L, The Performance Centre, University College Falmouth, Tremough Campus, Penryn TR10 9LX

Apartment House Ensemble

John Lely, Tim Parkinson and Markus Trunk, the team behind Music We'd Like to Hear since 2005, have chosen music which, on the surface, is matter-of-fact and sometimes stripped to the bone. At the same time it glows with conviction and focused concentration. This is music they would like to hear, by composers whose work they feel needs sharing.

Reflecting subtle differences in the curators' tastes, the featured works are far from uniform and demonstrate a wealth of distinctive approaches: from Alvin Lucier's pure investigations of close frequencies to the pronounced individualism of Canadian Martin Arnold; from the meticulously detailed scorings of Frankfurt composer Thomas Stiegler to the improvisatory concepts of veteran experimentalist Philip Corner; while the serene spirituality of Swiss cult composer Jürg Frey and London-based Richard Emsley contrasts with the multiplicitous aesthetic of Christian Wolff.

Produced by Sound and Music, Listen To This is a series of concerts bringing high-quality contemporary composition to audiences across the UK, inviting people to be adventurous in the way they listen. Sound and Music has invited British composers to curate programmes that introduce new audiences to contemporary music, through work that is challenging yet engaging. These programmes are performed by groundbreaking music ensemble Apartment House.

This programme is curated by Music We'd Like to Hear: exposing otherwise unknown international composers, giving us insights into unusual aspects of familiar instruments and creating calm spaces for listening, Music We'd Like to Hear's concerts are intimate and intense, exploring acoustics, sound and silence, being amongst the first to bring composers such as the Wandelweiser group (www.timescraper.de) and Chiyoko Szlavnics to the UK (www.chiyokoszlavnics.org).
