Artist Statement

I have been developing a language of abstract landscape painting since the early 1990s.

My work usually starts with a number of quite specific observational landscape studies. These are superimposed over each other onto the canvas in a cubist manner, and then slowly abstracted through the process of painting. At some point in this process the act of painting, in itself, gains precedent over the original subject matter.

Abstraction allows me to make reference to changes in scale, viewpoint and time. The layering and splattering of pigment, and the scraping back of paint to reveal earlier marks, is symbiotic to the passage of time or changing viewpoint within the landscape.

All my work is undertaken in oil paint with the liberal use of added oil mediums such as microcrystalline wax, Spectraflow and linseed oil. This allows the rapid build up of impasto effects and the repeated reworking of surfaces, while making the whole process affordable.  For initial ‘underpainting' I usually use a combination of black and white water based paints, conte crayon, chinagraph pencil and charcoal.

I am following in a tradition of British abstract landscape painting, which includes the work of Peter Lanyon and Duncan Shanks. I am also influenced by the mix of ‘painterly painting' and strong monochromatic underpainting in Matisse's 1911- 1919 interior's, and Max Beckmann's triptychs.
