Students work

1, 442,666 Steps' is an exhibition of Time-Based Art Practices taking place at the Dartington campus from 4 to 6 September 2008.   It takes its title from the factual distance counted in footsteps between the Atelier Rafi Gallery in Frankfurt, Germany and the Shippon Studios of the Dartington Campus, University College Falmouth.  The title suggests not only the fictive ‘performative' act of walking, and of distance between these two places, but also of steps taken and distances crossed within this artistic exchange, both culturally and politically.

Students workThe exhibition builds on a unique international exchange between artists currently based in South West England and artists living and working in Frankfurt and the Rhein-Main Area of Germany.  In July 2008, MA students and staff from the Dartington Campus travelled to Germany and exhibited their work over three days at Atelier Rafi Gallery Space in Frankfurt.  In exchange, on the 4, 5 and 6 September, six German artists will exhibit under the same title at the Dartington campus in Devon:  Sofia Greff, Karin Hoerler, Vollrad Kutscher, Ahmad Rafi, Roza Rueb and  Angelika Schroeder.

This artistic endeavour highlights the College's reputation as an international centre for contemporary artistic exchange, dialogue and exhibition:  there will be three days of substantial, provocative and exciting work; including installation, video, performance, drawing, and text works along with video screenings, live events and the opportunity to hear artists discuss their work.

The concept for the exhibition (the fourth event in the series ‘Taste of Place' presentations at Atelier Rafi) has been realized by Ahmad Rafi, Artist and Curator of Atelier Rafi Gallery in Frankfurt, Germany; and co-organised by current MA Visual Performance student and artist, Sofia Greff, and artist and Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Dartington, Gillian Wylde.
