William Barclay

Before starting work for University College Falmouth in 2008, William spent 13 years as a journalist for international news organisations such as Reuters and Agence France-Presse (AFP) both in the UK and abroad.

After reading French and Russian at Exeter University, he started his career working as a news reporter for The Moscow Tribune newspaper in 1993 when capitalism was still in its chaotic infancy in the Russian capital. William then joined the Moscow bureau of United Press International (UPI) as a staff reporter covering politics, economics, business and the occasional sports event. In 1995 he returned to the UK and worked as a freelance sub-editor for UPI and The Sun newspaper before taking up the post of staff sports correspondent for UPI in London. He covered his first Olympics at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta and reported on numerous high profile international sports events including Euro 96 and Wimbledon.

In 1997 William moved to Paris to work as a sub-editor on the international sports desk of AFP. After covering the 1998 World Cup as a reporter he returned to London to become their UK and Ireland sports correspondent. William then worked briefly as a multimedia news journalist for BBC News Online before joining Reuters as a staff sports correspondent in 2000. As one of Reuters' chief sports writers he covered the England football team, the Champions League, the 2002 World Cup in Japan, the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy, as well as Wimbledon and the French Open on numerous occasions.

In late 2006 William moved to Cornwall and currently works as a freelance multimedia writer in addition to lecturing on the journalism courses at UCF. He specialises in teaching the basic journalistic skills of news writing, news gathering, feature writing and sub-editing and also offers specialist international journalism and sports journalism options, as well as supervising portfolio work.

William holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) qualification and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). He is currently developing research interests in three areas: Journalism Education; Global Mass Media Communications; and Global Manifestations of the Free Press in Emerging Democracies.
