Michael Rofe's background is in music theory and analysis, and he specialises in writing about music. He is particularly interested in contemporary music, musical energetics, Russian music, music and time, and temporal proportion in music; he has additional interests in popular music and music technology.

Michael has professional connections with researchers and musical archives in the UK, USA, Russian, Finland, Germany and France. He has worked as a teacher and researcher for a number of UK universities, and for Classic FM.

Recent outputs

Kaija Saariaho: Visions, Narratives, Dialogues (Ashgate, 2011). Michael co-edited and contributed to this book: the first English-language symposium on one of Finland's most prominent composers.

Current projects/forthcoming outputs

Dimensions of Energy in Shostakovich's Symphonies (Ashgate, 2012). Michael has recently finished this monograph; it is due for release in early 2012. The book offers broad speculation on what constitutes 'energy' in music and the role of temporal proportion in music (particularly golden section), and he shows how these operate in the symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich.
