Tom Scott

Photo of Tom ScottTom was born in Bristol and grew up in Hampshire and North Yorkshire. He studied English at Keble College Oxford, followed by an MA in African Studies from the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS).

Tom spent much of his twenties living and working abroad, firstly as a volunteer teacher in a village school in Lesotho in southern Africa and then as a university lecturer in English as a Foreign Language in Nagoya, Japan. On returning to England he worked as a freelance lecturer, copywriter and editor in London, where he designed and taught a variety of courses in language and cross-cultural studies for institutions including the British Council and SOAS.

In 2001 Tom moved with his family to Falmouth. Since then he has worked as a freelance copywriter for businesses and non-profit organisations in Cornwall and beyond, as well as teaching on and helping to run the MA Professional Writing course at University College Falmouth.

Writing projects on which Tom has worked recently include:

Cornwall Pure Business – a campaign initiated by Cornwall Enterprise to promote Cornwall as a business location.

The new Cornwall Brand.

Online ‘plain English’ guides to business-related issues for the Department of Trade and Industry.

Brochures, manuals, websites and press releases for a wide variety of European companies (from Torres Wines to ING Bank).

Interactive CD-ROMs and other e-learning materials for the Basic Skills Agency and Granada Learning (with the Penzance-based content producer content team online).

Articles for newspapers and journals including The Financial Times.

Tom’s interest in environmental issues goes back to the time he spent in Lesotho, where he became involved in a tree-planting campaign designed to counter the erosion problems that beset the region. He is a long-standing member of Friends of the Earth and in 2005 he launched Cornwall Switch, a campaign aimed at persuading people in Cornwall to switch to renewably sourced electricity as part of the battle against global warming.
