Part-time Lecturer
Tim Hubbard is currently Weekend Editor at BBC Radio Cornwall and also presents a Saturday breakfast news programme and a Sunday morning lifestyle feature with a ‘phone-in’ show. He also began teaching at University College Falmouth in 1994.
After graduating in Drama and English from the University of Hull in 1976, Tim left behind his acting work (which had included roles with English National Opera, Gulbenkian Films and BBC Radio Humberside) to follow postgraduate studies at the University of Exeter.
He went on to teach Drama to both adults and children in Cornish schools, starting freelance radio work with BBC Radio Cornwall when it went on air in 1983. Since then Tim has presented or produced virtually every programme in the station’s output including Breakfast, Drivetime and other news sequences, quizzes, ‘phone-ins’ and chat shows, as well as feature series and documentaries for which he has won specialist awards. He has also anchored major live one-off programmes such as budgets, general election specials and coverage of the death and funeral of the Princess of Wales.
Tim was Highly Commended in the BT West of England Press and Broadcast Awards for 1996/7 as Radio News Broadcaster of the Year, winning the title outright in 1999/2000 with the judges praising his “skilfully placed and paced questions and intellectual rigour.” In May 1998 he won the radio industry’s most prestigious national prize, a Sony Gold, for his “quite outstanding presentation” in the Drivetime category and in April 1999 achieved unprecedented success by winning a second Sony Gold as National Talk/News Broadcaster of the Year.
Alongside his radio work in Cornwall Tim has contributed to nationally networked programmes on BBC Radios One, Two, Four and Five-Live. Specialising in Cornish subjects, in June 1995 he hosted Golowan, a special live edition of the BBC Radio 2 Arts Programme with The Times’ radio critic commenting “He knows Cornwall like the back of his hand.” His television work has included the presentation of a network series of holiday features for BBC 1’s Good Morning with Anne and Nick, as well as reports and features for BBC 1s Spotlight with corporate video and voice over work including promotions and series for AVS Broadcast, BT, Richmond Training, Partech Electronics and the Gaia Trust. He has even been heard, as himself, to announce the latest murder to puzzle Inspector Wycliffe (HTV).
Tim’s other freelance work has included hosting major live presentations for companies such as British Gas, Lloyds Bank, Marks and Spencer as well as charities such as Macmillan Cancer Relief and The National Trust. He has also been the sole anchor for video based promotions for AVS Broadcast at the International Television Symposium in Montreux, the National Association of Broadcasters Forum in Las Vegas and the International Broadcasters Conference in Amsterdam. He is a frequent after dinner speaker, and on stage has hosted several author/audience discussions with writers such as P.D. James, Fay Weldon, Charlotte Bingham, Clive James, Ruth Rendell and John le Carré.
He has written features and articles for national newspapers and magazines including Country Living, Gardeners’ World, The Express on Sunday, Escape Routes and The Sunday Times. Tim has been a regular feature writer for The Western Morning News, written a West Country family saga for an internet web site, features for Cornwall’s Tourist Board, promotional brochures, artist’s biographies and exhibition catalogues, as well as the foreword to John Miller’s Another Shade of Blue. His first book, A Year in Cornwall with Tim Hubbard was published in 2000.
