Karl PhillipsKarl took up his appointment as Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at University College Falmouth in October 2003. He currently teaches across a range of units including Screenwriting, Film Journalism, Experimental and Avant Garde Cinema, World Cinema and Dissertation support. He also serves as Level Three tutor and holds places on the committees for the Full Economic Costing Steering Group and the Virtual Learning Environment Group.

His previous post was as a Lecturer in Film Studies / Level One Tutor at Middlesex University, North London (1997-2003) where the healthy cohort often exceeded a 100 plus per year group. He taught the above subjects alongside National Cinema, Approaches to Horror, and a range of Level One Introductory Options as well deputising for the Programme Leader. He was also responsible for introducing the university’s first Key Skills unit into the programme in 1998 and Screenwriting in 1999.

Karl also has ten years’ experience as a Film Critic for a variety of regionally based media including BBC Radio and was also a member of the board at the Reading Film Theatre.

His current research plans include The Short Film and Film-making in Downtown New York (1975-85).

With the help of colleagues he recently organised three well-received introductory lectures on the relationship between Artists and Film as part of the St Ives Festival, (Sept, 2005). He has just been asked to coordinate a longer event with the Tate Gallery, St Ives for 2006, again as part of the St Ives Festival. He also interviewed composer Dickon Hinchliffe for the Cornwall Film Festival (Nov, 2005).

He is currently working on two experimental film projects (Orbital3 and Road Movies, both initially inspired by his essay on the post-apocalyptic road movie in Lost Highways) and two short film screenplays (Rush, Rush: Hurry, Hurry and Skip). He also features as one half of The Decasia Twins, a DJ duo rescoring soundtracks live, and will also be serving on the 2006 Cornwall Film Festival committee.
