Who's who

Dr Ruth Heholt

Senior Lecturer

Ruth has been teaching on the English course since 1997. Before coming to the college she worked as a counsellor and for MIND helping to co-ordinate volunteers. During a few years spent in London, she was active in community journalism, writing for several community-based newspapers and publications in Hackney.

Her first degree was in English at the University of Reading. Her PhD looked at the idea of the ‘normal; masculinity and the family. Examining tropes of crisis, visuality and the body it examined the seeming marginalization of ‘normal', white, middle class masculinity and the nuclear family. Since then her research interests have widened and she is currently looking at masculinity in the Victorian and Edwardian ghost story.

Other projects include an exploration of contemporary ghost hunting in television and tourism in Britain.
