Who's who

Georg Finch

Senior Lecturer

Georg Finch joined the media department at University College Falmouth in October 2008 to help with the fledgling digital animation course.

Georg was teaching for 8 years at the National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) at Bournemouth University, where he was also the programme leader for the internationally renowned MA in 3D Computer Animation. With over 400 of his graduates in the film and animation business, Georg adds a new range of contacts for the students to interact with. His ex-students are now in positions in all the film post production houses such as Dreamworks, Pixar, Weta, Smoke & Mirrors and UK based Framestore, Cinesite to name just a few. These connections ensure that the CGI teaching at Falmouth is current to the industry.

His introduction to computer animation was slightly unusual, in that his undergraduate degree was Biological Imaging with a specialism in Paleontology. Upon leaving, Georg looked into photography as he had been brought up in a London fashion studio, digital imaging was just coming to the forefront and a trip to the animation course at Bournemouth to talk through possibilities lead to a place on the masters course. A very different course to now, there was a heavy aspect of programming and maths and very little teaching of industry practice. After the MA Georg spent a year and a half as an animator for ‘the cupboard’ making simulator ride films, one of which was projected onto a waterfall in China. Whilst working at ‘the cupboard’ he helped teach this software at the NCCA and eventually taught fulltime, first as a technical assistant in Digital effects and then as a full time lecturer.

Georg left Bournemouth in 2006 after having got the Masters programme to the highest level he could within the current structure (it was listed by 3D world as the no. 1 place in the UK to study, a title Georg intends to take for Falmouth) and the desire to work on an undergraduate programme with more emphasis on the creative use of the media rather than just technical prowess. He specialises in the teaching of the complex 3D animation side of the course and compliments the expertise already in the teaching team.

Outside of teaching Georg has a passion for building and driving unusual vehicles, so please tell him if he comes to work with oil on his face.
