Dr Simon Clarke

Senior Lecturer

Simon ClarkeDr Simon Clarke studied printed textiles at Middlesex University and Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, University of Central England. He was Textile Fellow at the University of Plymouth, where he explored the relationship between painting and printed textiles.

His PhD research into East African textiles incorporated fieldwork and collecting supported by the British Institute in Eastern Africa. This research included a variety of theoretical perspectives that informed the development of digitally generated art works.

He was a Lecturer in the Department of Fine Art at Kenyatta University, Nairobi and taught as a Visiting Lecturer at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He was Senior Lecturer in Textiles for Fashion at the University of Northampton.

Clarke’s current area of research is digitally printed textiles and Eastern African visual arts drawing upon theoretical perspectives from art, design and visual anthropology.

He has contributed to publications including East African Contours, Reviewing Creativity and Visual Culture, Horniman Museum Press and South African Dress, University of KwaZulu Natal Press.
