Helen Jackson

Part-time Lecturer

Photo of Helen JacksonSince 1988, when she moved to Cornwall, Helen has been working as a part-time lecturer at University College Falmouth (previously Falmouth School of Art & Design and later Falmouth College of Arts).

Her role during this time has mainly been to contribute to the delivery of Historical and Cultural Studies on a range of undergraduate courses. This has involved devising programmes of study to provide a theoretical context for broad cultural practices, from art and design to popular culture. At the present time, a large proportion of the work constitutes dissertation supervision, currently on BA(Hons) Journalism, BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts, BA(Hons) Illustration and BA(Hons) Graphic Design. In the past, Helen has also been involved with the BA(Hons) Fine Art course and with the MA 20th Century Art & Design: Histories & Theories course. Helen has enjoyed the diversity experienced when working with different courses.

In a collaborative venture in 1999, she and a colleague assembled material for an exhibition, Loose Parts, to explore the links between the art and the educational ideas of Simon Nicholson. Between March and June of that year the exhibition was shown in the College's Woodlane Gallery, and at High Cross House, Dartington.

During the years 1997 to 2002, Helen was also teaching for the University of Exeter on several part-time courses in the Department of Lifelong Learning, which were held at Hayne Corfe in Truro. Her role was to provide art history and other visual culture study modules as part of combined Humanities courses. She found it interesting to work with specialists in music, literature and theology.

Helen's main academic interest has been in the inter-relationships between modernist art movements and wider cultural developments. Her MA consisted of an exploration of the role played by the popular press in terms of the publicity used by the early twentieth century avant-garde in Britain to promote its cause.

Before working at Falmouth, Helen's background was in art education in both the secondary and further education sectors. She has been an art teacher in comprehensive schools in Staffordshire, and has also taught art and related cultural studies in a Youth Custody Centre for over five years.
