Andy Neal

Senior Lecturer

MDes MISTD

Andy NealAndy's career began as a musician; composing and performing material with Detritus, and recording the albums ‘Perpetual Defiance' (1) and ‘If But For One' (2). He studied graphic design over a period of six years; initially in Cornwall, and then in Edinburgh, graduating with a first-class honours degree in Visual Communication and later with an MDes in Graphic Design.

He worked commercially in Scotland with Millhouse Design Consultants developing the print & exhibition spaces for the (then) new National Museum of Scotland, as well as working on broader editorial and identity projects. He then moved to Navyblue Design Consultants working as a New Media Designer on web, CD-Rom and moving image projects for clients that included Tony Stone, Ellesse and Orange, together with award winning work for EPCC (part of Edinburgh University).

Andy started teaching part-time in 1998 at Glasgow School of Art, and set up [nbuffalo] in 1999 as an informal umbrella for his own commercial and personal work. He has been teaching at Falmouth since January 2000 (full-time since September 2001), and currently oversees the final year of the BA(Hons) Graphic Design programme. He continues to produce material under the [nbuffalo] name, developing a variety of projects for both commercial and non-commercial contexts. He is a member of the International Society of Typographic Designers, has been an invited assessor at the ISTD Student Assessment Scheme since 2004, and is Associate Director of Exhale, a Cornish Community Interest Company.

Andy's academic teaching normally revolves around typography, together with the fundamental process of developing creative and appropriate design ideas. After fifteen years of commercial focus, his design practice is beginning to transition back towards more personal work. In particular, re-connecting with the notion of ‘creative practitioner' (rather than ‘graphic designer' or ‘musician') and re-engaging with the core foundations of his practice; namely letterforms, writing and audio-visual experimentation. He is also exploring the relationship between design, social dysfunctions and health inequalities with Exhale.

He lives and works in Cornwall.
