Jane Gottelier

Programme Leader, Fashion and Performance Sportswear Design

Jane GottelierFashion designers, Jane and Patrick Gottelier, pride themselves on doing things differently. "I met Patrick whilst I was constructing an inflatable jacket on the Textile Design MA at Central St Martins College," Jane explains. "I wanted to weld rather than sew it, and Patrick was studying MA Product Design, specialising in welding PVC fabric." From there, their working relationship grew as they realised that their combination of specialisms gave them a unique edge.

"Patrick being a product designer gave us an unorthodox approach to fashion," Jane continues. "We applied our fashion and industrial training to designing in a different way, usually putting shape first rather than texture – it became a great success." In 1978, the duo set up Artwork, a revolutionary label that turned the preconception of what knitwear was on its head. Nearly 30 years on, Artwork is an international fashion brand with its main markets in the USA, Japan and Italy, designing and manufacturing not just knitwear but complete clothing ranges for men, women and children.

It was their ability to innovate and find a different approach to fashion, which led to the duo being invited to head up Falmouth’s new undergraduate courses in Fashion Design and Performance Sportswear Design. "The idea of setting up two fashion courses in Cornwall was irresistible," explains Jane. "They have such unique selling points as they’ll reflect what living in Cornwall is all about – and the clothes and performance sportswear that go with this lifestyle."

Jane's ambition is for the term 'Falmouth Fashion' to become recognised worldwide, and for their graduates to be both informed by, and connected to, the global fashion industry.
