Gayle Matthias

Senior Lecturer

Gayle MatthiasGayle Matthias joined University College Falmouth as a Senior Lecturer on the BA(Hons) Contemporary Crafts course at the beginning of 2004.

Gayle specializes in kiln-formed glass processes and besides her teaching has been a practicing maker for twenty years, exhibiting nationally and internationally. She has work in the permanent collections of the V&A, Musee de Vianne and Ebeltoft Museum of Glass amongst others, and has also been an artist in residence in France and USA. Examples of her work can be found in many glass publications including ‘Techniques in kiln-formed Glass' by Keith Cummings and 'Contemporary International Glass' by Jennifer Opie.

Gayle’s entry for The Glass Sellers Prize for Engraving was highly commended.

She has taught on glass courses at Wolverhampton University, Westminster Adult Education Service, Central St Martins, North East Wales Institute and Barnet College. Gayle also worked in the Gallery Education Department of the Crafts Council for over ten years, assisting and running workshops and gallery tours and supporting a series of Higher Education conferences.

Gayle has collaborated with the artist, Aron McCartney, providing a case study for PhD paper, ’The Development and Utilization of Ceramic Shell Mould Techniques and Mould Surface Release Agents in the Design and Forming of Small Scale Studio Hot Glass’, 2001.

Currently engaged in research into glass casting combined with digital technologies, Gayle has taught in adult and higher education for over twelve years.
