John Miller

AIR Projects Manager

John MillerJohn Miller has been at Falmouth since October 2005. His role as Director of the School of Design involved developing Design as a subject at the University College - shaping the future for our design courses, design research and the role of design in business and the community. 

John is particularly interested in linking the worlds of business and the university, which is reflected in his background as a design entrepreneur, and continues in his involvement in developing live projects at UCF. This drive has informed many recent developments at Falmouth including the new Fashion and Performance Sportswear Design courses, the design BA courses, and The Academy for Innovation & Research (AIR).

John is contributing to the internationalising of Falmouth through developing new partnerships and supporting initiatives such as the Univrsity College's annual exhibition at the Milan Furniture Fair, and leading our successful application to join Cumulus (the international association of art, media and design colleges).

A graduate of Leeds Polytechnic and London Guildhall University, in the 1990s he ran Design Strength, a successful design and manufacturing company specialising in disability and healthcare. In 1997 John joined London Metropolitan University (previously the London College of Furniture) where he headed the BA(Hons) Furniture Design course, building it up to be one of the leading and most innovative furniture courses in the country. He continues to be active in the furniture industry, is a Liveryman of the Furnituremakers company, acts as a consultant in the industry and is a founder director of MARK Product Ltd, a new design-led furniture company based in Cornwall. www.markproduct.com .

Nest ChairIn 2002 John set up Furniture Works, a resource centre for furniture designers and manufacturers in east London. Furniture Works quickly grew to become a focal point for the design community has since expanded into Metropolitan Works - a leading centre for all the creative industries. Through the various projects and exhibitions he led by John helped launch the careers of many of today's design high flyers. Whilst at Furniture Works John proposed and developed a concept for a Digital The Nest Chair by John Miller for MARKManufacturing and Workspace Centre and raised £9.2m its capital funding. Digital manufacturing remains a key interest which informs John's ongoing design and consultancy work.

Other external work currently includes appointments as an external examiner at London South Bank University, Rycotewood Furniture Centre of Oxford and Cherwell College, and Cornwall College. John has served on the boards of the Cornwall Design Forum and Creative Kernow, an organisation established to provide hands-on support to small creative businesses in Cornwall. He is a member of the working party for DOTT Cornwall - a major community-based design led initiative in partnership with the Design Council and Cornwall County Council.
