Derek Tyman
Part-time Lecturer
Derek Tyman is an artist who is based in Manchester. He has worked collaboratively with artist Emma Rushton since 1997 and their recent work has focused on particular locations and events to examine notions of public/civic space and place and ideas of belonging, resistance and protest. A recent project Will Someone Stop You…? (2007) focused on the flight of Mathias Rust, the young West German who in 1987 flew into Red Square, Moscow in the then USSR. The project brought together an exhibition at Artis Arts Centre, “s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, printed ephemera, separate public discussions at Artis and Unit 2 gallery, London, and a publication Flying Down to Moscow.
Rushton and Tyman have realised collaborative projects/exhibitions both nationally and internationally and as part of a number of recent projects they have invited other artists, including Geir Tore Holm, Brighid Lowe, Paul Rooney and Kwong Lee, to make work in response to their work/to occupy a space within their projects. Recent solo exhibitions/projects include: Neues Kunstforum, Koln, Germany (2009); Piccadillyland, Art on the Underground, London (2008); Unit 2 Gallery, London, England and 1a Space Hong Kong, China (2006); Castlefield Gallery, Manchester and City Art Gallery, Leeds, England (2005); Konstakuten, Stockholm, Sweden (2004); Lokaal 01, Breda, The Netherlands (2003).
During 2004-5 Rushton and Tyman were Artists-in-Residence for ASSEMBLY 05, Bath and in 2006 and 2007 they participated in the international residency programme at 1a Space, Hong Kong, China.
