Katrina Brown

Lecturer

Katrina BrownKatrina Brown has been based in The Netherlands for the last 20 years as an independent dance artist and choreographer. She works with dance and old-and-new media and in particular the processes and spaces falling and arising between media.

Her choreographic work was first produced by DansWerkplaats Amsterdam and the [Nes]Theaters in Amsterdam, 1992-2000 and supported by Dutch funding bodies, making group pieces including A Man 2000 and Amoeba Blues 2003, and duo performances with live musicians, Rajesh Mehta, Marco Ciciliano, Han Buhrs.

She has had a strong solo career including the recent A Singular Gesture 2006/07 at Dansateliers Rotterdam and Tanzfabrik Berlin, a performative installation involving movement, drawing and video. She recently in spring 2009 adapted this into a gallery exhibition/installation at The Dartington Gallery.

She has a long-standing collaboration with musician/composer Han Buhrs, including the film Waterman for the BBC/NPS Dance for the Camera in 2003, live duet project ECHO and the currently touring EtsBeest, a move/draw/sound research project with pre-school children. With Etsbeest they have been invited to festivals and symposia all over Europe 2008-2010, (Helsinki, Paris, Nantes, Salzburg, Hamm, Liege).

Katrina completed an MA in 2006 at the theatre school in Amsterdam in choreography and new technologies where she researched the nature of action/trace through moving/drawing. Within this she created a series of performance events on site, in galleries, schools and theatre. Her final piece was a website: www.katrinabrown.net/moving_drawing.

During this time she developed a link with the research centre L'Animal a L'Esquena in Catalonia, with residencies in 2006 and 2007 and will be returning in 2010. There she researched notions around verticality and the flat surface and the making of a 'book'. www.openbook1.wordpress.com

She is currently working on two projects:

Her Essay; that folds back on a memory of chalk paths was published in the Dutch Theatre Institute biannual book Research in Dance, edited by the University of Utrecht.
