Pewter Live is an annual design competition run by the Worshipful Company of Pewterers. Its aim is to revive interest in the use of pewter as the material of choice for domestic and interior products, jewellery and personal accessories.

Laura designed an outdoor table with a top covered with a map of Central London, enhancing the owner’s sense of place and bringing an awareness of the immediate landscape. The intricacy of the pewter lines imbues the surface with a feeling of preciousness and delicacy. Combining traditional woodworking techniques and CAD/CAM technologies, this piece is a fusion of old and new. Laura attended the awards ceremony at the London where she was awarded her prize from Sir Christopher Frayling, Chairman of Arts Council England and Rector of the Royal College.

"The experience of doing the pewter competition was invaluable, " Laura says. "It's given me confidence in myself and my ideas. Going through the application and selection process gave me a firsthand insight into how to present and promote my work. The awards ceremony was an additional learning curve as I had the opportunity to talk with practitioners, designers and journalists.  They all offered their advice and encouragement."

While discussing future benefits, Laura says, "This networking opportunity has already proved fruitful.  This experience has led to me currently working on two commissions for inlayed furniture."
